From The High Times May 1969

WHS CEASES EXISTENCE - 1969 GRADUATES END LINE

Eventually all that is written will fade and in future decades the memory of Wellsburg High School will become incessantly vague. Only those persons who daily strolled through its doors, plodding up and down the three flights of stairs, will distinctly remember this medium of education. Taking pride in having attended it, graduating Wellsburg High students will have gained four years of experience and knowledge. Honors bestowed on many of its intelligent and athletic achievers have ranked it among the secondary schools of high esteem.

Reminising on their Auld Lang Syne, most W. H. S. veterans will recall these famed words, "Happy is the Man Who Findeth Wisdom." This motto is an excerpt from the Bible, Proverbs 14:30. No other words could do a better job in relating the effects of acquiring a good sound education. High school is not the peak of our learning. The Amount of wisdom we have attained in these four years is relatively small in comparison to what we will be confronted with in the future. The learning process never really stops, as long as we possess the power of reason and the gift of breath we will be gaining knowledge.

The formal education may have ended here, however, as we continue to live day by day in harmony with our worldly neighbors, learning will continue also. The accomplishments of previous deeds will be the ground work for easier or better methods. Experience will lend its hand in forming a nation of strong, healthy-minded individuals, who will represent a country where education is available for almost everybody. These reasons, and innumerably more, confirm the meaning of the words in our school motto.

Every school has its own song and Wellsburg is no exception. The following verses constitute the words of

Wellsburg High School Alma Mater: To Alma Mater praises we sing To thee, O Mother, love do we bring, Guide of our youth, teacher of Truth, O Wellsburg High, Hail Praise to thee. Thine own true sons and daughters, we Pledge thee once more our loyalty, Fountain of Light, Wisdom and Right, Dear Alma Mater, Hail to thee.
Written exclusively for Wellsburg High in 1936 by B R Weimer, these words have resounded through the voices of her students for thirty-three years. For each student they hold a different and unique meaning. Whether it be the happiness of experienced learning, or merely the joy of completing one's high school days, the Alma Mater is looked upon in a respectful manner. The musical lyrics of our Alma Mater give further emphasis to the memorable years and recollection of the happier times spent in high school

As the last senior class nears June 9, the set graduation date, they are preparing to leave the pattern of life which they have been living radically or conservatively the past twelve years, for a new way of existence, Whether success will follow is up to them, for now those graduated students will be the master of their actions and only if they keep an open mind can they solve the problems and accomplish the work that is left to them; however, with Wellsburg High School as their guide and teacher, how can they miss. The "Orange and Black" will long be remembered and both the students and faculty who gained and taught are to be recognized for their efforts to make this high school honorable and a credit to the community and the entire national system of education.
