Sarah was born in Maryland in 1782, and married Solomon Connell, an Irishman in Wellsburg, Brooke County, in what was at that time, Virginia. It is now West Virginia. Her marriage is recorded in the Brooke County Court house as January 30, 1782. Sarah and Solomon had nine children. After her daughter's Elizabeth's death in 1844 she raised her granddaughter Mary Ellen Breese. Mary Ellen is listed in the 1850 census as residing with her grandparents, Solomon Connell and his wife Sarah.
She was known as "Sally."
Solomon, Sarah's husband died January 18, 1851,and about 1852 Sally and her son David Alexander Connell moved to the area around Ipava, Fulton County,
Illinois, and settled on land in Farmer's township. Later, about 1853 or 1854, James Magruder Connel and his wife Martha Ann and two Children, Clarinda and Lela, joined Sally and David. Edgar and Emma, children of James and Martha Ann died in Wellsburg, WV and they are buried in the old burying ground.
The farm on which Sally and her sons lived is still in the possession of the granddaughter of Sally, Ella Connell David, and was her birthplace, as well as the birthplace of Winnifred D. Connell Brown (as of 1929).
Sarah died November 6, 1864, and is buried in a small grave yard on the farm owned by the children of Clarinda Connell Zoll (Henry Zoll) in Farmers Twp about two miles from the farm on which she made her home in Illinois. Her sons David Alexander Connell and James Magruder Connell are buried near her, as well as Martha, James wife, and Clarinda Connell Zoll and her husband Henry.
Note" Farm owned by Ella Connell David( Mrs. Rees W. David) Farmer's Twp. Saray lived here. 2 miles from farm is graveyard of Clarinda Connell Zoll. Children own it: James Ross Zoll, Frank Louis Zoll."
The family had a walnut box 6x10x18 inches which was left by James Magruder Connell, and contained copies of deeds, notes, and documents belonging to Solomon Connell, and a few of James Magruders. |
