ISAAC RICHARDSON

Very little is known about Isaac RICHARDSON. He was probably born some time about 1800. This figure is an estimation and comes from the birth date of his oldest child in 1824. Additionally, in both the 1830 and 1840 censuses he said he was born from 1800 to 1810. In the 1880 and 1900 federal censuses his son, Samuel Matson RICHARDSON, gave his father's birthplace as Ohio.

A biography of William Pitt RICHARDSON, the first of Isaac RICHARDSON's children, includes this information:

Family tradition has it that Isaac RICHARDSON, besides being a farmer, was also a cooper (barrel maker) and a teacher. In the 1840 federal census it was said that he was employed in “Manufactures and Trades.” We do know that Isaac RICHARDSON lived in Cross Creek Township in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in the years 1830 and 1840 because he was enumerated there in the federal censuses. In 1830 there were males in his household one aged under five, one 5 to 10, one 30 to 40. The females were one under 5, one 5 to 10, and one 20 to 30. In 1840 there were 2 males under 5, one 10 to 15, one 15 to 20, and one 30 to 40. The females in the 1840 federal census included two under 5, one 10 to 15, and one 30 to 40. (The only other family in Cross Creek in 1830 with the RICHARDSON surname was Mathew RICHARDSON. This family had one male under five and another aged 30 to 40; one female under five, one 5 to 10 and one aged 20 to 30. There was a William RITCHESON in Cross Creek in 1840 with one male under five, one male 10 to 15 and a male 40 to 50, a female under five, two females 15 to 20 and a female 30 to 40). The Isaac RICHARDSON family is said to have lived in the town of Independence (formerly Williamsburg), Washington County, Pennsylvania. He probably died after 1844 and before the census of 1850, because Isaac’s youngest child Elizabeth was born circa 1845. I have assumed that Isaac died because Nancy RICHARDSON, aged 41, was enumerated with her children Sarah RICHARDSON, aged 10, James RICHARDSON, aged 8, and Elizabeth RICHARDSON, aged 5, in the 1850 federal census of Brooke County, Virginia (now West Virginia) and Isaac’s name was not listed..

Probably about 1823 (another estimation that comes from the 1824 birth date of their first child) Isaac RICHARDSON was married to Nancy WILLIAMS, daughter of Joseph and Sara (WILLIAMS) WILLIAMS. The DAR records of Wanda (KIRKBRIDE) FARR, National #207562, and those of Cora (RICHARDSON) SPRIGGS, National #73578, give the year of birth of Nancy WILLIAMS as 1809. See the 1850 census in appendix B, item 6. If she had been born in 1809 she would have married at about the age of fourteen and become a mother at fifteen. Samuel Matson RICHARDSON gave Pennsylvania as the birthplace of his mother in the 1880, 1890 and 1900 censuses. However, she gave her own birthplace as Ohio in the 1850 census, also in the 1850 census she lived alone with her minor children noted above. In the 1860 Wellsburg, Brooke County, Virginia, census John MILLER, aged 70, house carpenter, was enumerated with his wife Nancy MILLER, 52, and her children Sarah A. RICHARDSON, 19, and Elizabeth P. RICHARDSON, 14. I assume that Nancy (WILLIAMS) RICHARDSON married John MILLER sometime after the 1850 census and before 1860. She probably died before the 20 July 1870, Wellsburg, Brooke County, West Virginia, census when John MILLER, 83, retired carpenter was living in the home of Amelia CARLE, 67, widow.

The children of Isaac and Nancy (WILLIAMS) RICHARDSON:

i. William Pitt RICHARDSON was born 25 May 1824 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He married Sarah Elizabeth SMITH, daughter of Dr. Edward and Catherine (JAMES) SMITH in 1848. She was born in 1824 and died in 1879. He was a Brigadier General during the Civil War and Attorney General of the State of Ohio. He died 4 Aug 1886 in New Castle, Henry County, Indiana. The “Marietta Times Newspaper,” August 12, 1886, Roll #25335, Ohio Historical Society said that he died August 4^th in his 62^nd year. The death caused be paralysis brought on by his wound he received in the war. Another obituary from “The Marietta Weekly Leader Newspaper,” Tuesday, August 10, 1886, Roll # 25935, located at the Ohio Historical Society reads:

Gen. W. P. Richardson

Gen. W. P. Richardson, who for several years past has resided at New Castle, Indiana, died at that place on Wednesday last. His remains were brought to this city for interment, which event took place from the residence of his son Charles, Front Street, Saturday, at two p.m., his remains being followed to the grave by a large number of sorrowing friends, among them being many members of the Bar and G. A. R.

Gen. Richardson was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, on May 25, 1824, and was educated at Washington College. He served through the Mexican War in the Third Ohio, and entered the war of rebellion in 1861, as Major of the 25th O. V. I., and was soon promoted to Colonel of the same regiment. At the battle of Chancellorsville, May 2, 1863, he was severely wounded in the shoulder, and lost the use of his right arm. After his partial recovery he was placed in command at Camp Chase, where he remained till August 1865. In October, 1864 he was elected Attorney General of Ohio, but he resigned and remained in the service. In December, 1864, he was breveted Brigadier General, and in September, 1865, he joined his command in South Carolina, with headquarters at Columbia, and afterwards was placed over the East District at Darlington. He was a lawyer of ability, and before the war of rebellion served many years as Prosecuting Attorney of Monroe County, Ohio, and after the close of the war he served as Collector of Internal Revenue, with his office at Marietta.

2. Emma Catherine RICHARDSON, born 8 Jun 1849, in Brooke Co., Virginia, died 19 Apr 1909, Washington Co., Ohio, buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Marietta, Ohio. Married Henry Clay POSEY 11 Sep 1873, Washington Co., Ohio. His parents were Alexander and Mahala, 1^st wife, (MORRISON) POSEY.

3. Mary E. RICHARDSON, born circa 1852 married (Male) WALKER; William McKnight WALKER, married (Female) PHILLIPS.

4. Adelia Frances RICHARDSON, born circa 1855. (She married John GORE. They had a daughter named Rhea, who married Walter HUSTON. They were the parents of actor/director John HUSTON. This relationship turns up in John HUSTON's biography–An Open Book).

5. Charles William RICHARDSON, born circa 28 Mar 1857, married Mary HOLTZ.

6. Ada RICHARDSON, born circa 1859, moved to Greensburg, Indiana.

7. Robert RICHARDSON, born circa 1864 or 1866, married Mary BIGGS.

1. Alonzo C. "Lon" RICHARDSON, born 14 Sep 1850 in Ohio. He married Henrietta BRYAN (1850-1893) and died in 1887.

2. Ella Vista RICHARDSON. born 5 July 1853, married Lewis Ludwig NIKOLAUS, who was born 27 Jun 1846. The marriage took place in 1875, place unknown. Ella died 2 Feb 1918.

3. Otto RICHARDSON, born 22 Aug 1859, probably in Stafford, Monroe County, Ohio. He died of rupture of the bladder on 30 Jun 1875 in New Matamoras, Washington County, Ohio. He was aged 15 years and 10 months.

4. Thomas R. RICHARDSON was born about 1860, probably in Ohio. He died about 1876, having drowned in the Ohio River, aged 16.

5. William Sherman RICHARDSON was born 25 Aug 1864, probably in Ohio. He was married three times. His first wife was Emma BRAUN, his second wife, name unknown, lived only one year after their marriage, his third wife was a widow, Carrie _____. He was a druggist in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio; he owned and operated "Uncle Bill's Drug Store." He died about 1960.

6. Florence B. RICHARDSON was born 3 Oct 1873 in New Matamoras, Washington County, Ohio. She died of "eruption of the lungs" (whooping cough) on 17 Feb 1876 in New Matamoras, Washington County, Ohio, aged 2 years, 4 months, 14 days.

+7. Flora Selmone RICHARDSON was born 11 March 1878 in New Matamoras, Washington County, Ohio. She married John Alvin DAVENPORT, son of George and Mary Elizabeth (RECKARD) DAVENPORT, on 5 Oct 1904 in New Matamoras. She died 30 Dec 1960 in Idylwood, Fairfax County, Virginia, and was buried in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, on 3 Jan 1961.

iii. A girl (may be number ii), born 1825 to 1830, who probably died young. She was mentioned in the 1830, but not in the 1840 Federal census.

iv. Belinda RICHARDSON, probably born between 1830 and 1840. She may have lived in Denver, Colorado, as I have a photograph of her taken by a studio there.

v. Another girl born between 1830 and 1835. (This is probably Mary Jane RICHARDSON, born 21 February 1831 in Eldersville, Washington County, Pennsylvania and died 11 September 1883 in Leesville, Ohio. She married in 1849 in Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio, Thomas Thompson FINNEY, who was born 2 August 1830 and died between 1907 and 1910 in Lakeville, Holmes County, Ohio, son of Washington and Martha (BELL) FINNEY. They had nine children. Thomas FINNEY married secondly Nancy (or Mary G.) SCHALL. He was a butcher in Carroll County, Ohio.)

1. Covington Gavill FINNEY, born 3 June 1850 and died young.

2. Dr. George Washington FINNEY, born 13 November 1851 in Holmes County, Ohio. He married on 6 March 1873 Laura May TAYLOR, who was born 22 September 1859.

3. Joseph Alexander FINNEY, born 18 May 1853, married in 1881 Gertrude (or Lucretia) LEYDA in Uhrichsville, Ohio. He died in 1910 in Mingo Junction, Ohio.

4. Thomas Grant FINNEY, born in 1855 and died in 1867, aged 12 years.

5. Bernard Sylvester FINNEY, born 5 July 1855, married Mary F. ADAIR and died in 1893 in Conneaut, Ohio.

6. Carrie FINNEY, born 18 May 1859 and married Oren Holmes PRICE in Leesville, Ohio.

7. Ella (or Laura Ella) FINNEY, born 6 May 1861(?) and married Alonzo E. ADAIR.

8. Luella (or Lulu L.) FINNEY, born 1 December 1861(?) And married William Mackey DEVOR on 10 September 1885.

9. Maud FINNEY, born 13 January 1874, died unmarried in March 1924 and was buried in Leesville, Ohio.)¹

vi. Alexander RICHARDSON (may be number vii) was probably born between 1835 and 1840. A family tradition has it that he was a spy for the Confederacy during the Civil War.

vii. Joseph RICHARDSON (may be number vi). He was born in 1837 and died in 1893 (tombstone in Independence township, Washington County, Ohio). He was married twice, his first wife (or perhaps second wife²) was a KIRKBRIDE. The tombstone next to his was his wife Martha A. who lived between 1841 to 1916. They had a son J.W. RICHARDSON (born 16 Jun 1868, died 11 March 1891)..

viii. Sarah RICHARDSON was born in Pennsylvania circa 1840. She married a very wealthy man, ______ ANGLE² of New York. He was an officer of the Erie Railroad and owned a New York hotel.

ix. James RICHARDSON was born in Pennsylvania circa 1841. There was an “I. L. RICHARDSON,” born 1842 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, clerk residing in Marietta, who married Drusilla GREEN in Brooke County, West Virginia on 5 November 1867. Drusilla was born in Brooke County, Virginia, single, daughter of Wm. E. and Eliza. Green. aged 20 years, resided in Brooke County. Her husband was 25 years old and single, the child of Isaac and Nancy RICHARDSON. They were married by J. A. Pierce I think “I. L.” must be this James.³

x. Elizabeth RICHARDSON was born in Pennsylvania circa 1845.

²The name “Angle” was supplied to me by cousin Kathleen (BLAIR) SERR in a letter dated 11 October 1975, daughter of Clara Mae NIKOLAUS . (Clara was born 16 February 1877 and died 15 August 1967. She married first Frederick KIRKBRIDE and secondly Owen T. BLAIR.) Clara was the daughter of Ella Vista RICHARDSON and Louis (Ludwig) NIKOLAUS. Ella Vista RICHARDSON was the daughter of Samuel Matson and Rebecca Harriet (SMITH) RICHARDSON. Kathleen SERR said that her mother said that Angle “was a man of means.”
