One of the early Justices to serve Brooke county was Moses Congleton.

     He not only was a Justice but records show him "keeping clean the Court house- his pay was $6.00 in the county levy.

      Note: in the Brooke County Court Orders, when he died, a person came into Court and swore that he had left his wife, did not mention any children.

MOSES CONGLETON

     Service Pennsylvania VA No 5806 and 5466 No WE-4930 B.L.Wt. 26738

     Born, October 4, 1763, Allen Township, Northampton or Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, the son of William and Mary Congleton. He died November 6, 1838. With the consent of his parents, he enlisted at the age of thirteen as a musician in Captain John Hay's company of the Pennsylvania militia under Major James Boyd in Lieutenant Colonel John Liggetts regiment. The night of the battle of Trenton, he repaired the American camp fires in company with William Moffit while the American Army withdrew towards Princeton. He was taken to Crosswick and rejoined General Rytman's brigade, then to Norristown where he remained until March 1777, when he was discharged. He re-enlisted under Captain John Sriver, Major Boyd's Battalion, in Colonel Stephen Beallett's Regiment of Northampton County militia at Brandywine. After being attached to several other military units he accompanied the Six Nations. He was discharged by Colonel Nicholas Kearns, 1781, after more than two years service.

      He moved to Brooke County, Virginia in 1794 and there was granted a pension and also bounty land warrant for 160 acres. His wife, Mary Grimes, daughter of Thomas and Margaret Grimes, was born September 20, 1763. They were married May 18, 1788. Northampton County Pennsylvania and had the following children: Margaret, March 29, 1789; Mary, April 30, 1791; John, May 31, 1793; Marie (married Thomas Good) December 1795; William and Juliana (twins) July 27, 1799; Thomas, January 1801. The children of Marie Congleton and Thomas Good were: Thomas, Elizabeth, Robert, Juliana and Emily. Supporting affidavits were filed by Nicholas Headington, Sam Henderson, Elizabeth Patton, Sam. M. Carty and Robert Doak.
