ALFRED GLASS

     Alfred Glass was born in the city of Exeter, Devonshire, England, September 1823; came to America and settled in Pittsburgh, in 1828. He received a common school education, went as an apprentice to the printer trade on the Pittsburgh Gazette, in 1837. Craig & Grant, publishers. At the expiration of his apprenticeship, he went to Wheeling and worked on the Wheeling Times; James E Wharton, publisher. He afterwards worked in Cincinnati, New Orleans and other Southern towns, from then he went east, residing in Camden, N. J, for several years. In 1852 at the solicitation of W R Allison, he went to Steubenville, Ohio where he was engaged for many years as a job printer. Afterwards he started a job office in that city, on his own account. In March 1866, he came to Wellsburg, W Va. Where he established the Wellsburg Democrat, issuing the first number on the 9th of March 1866. Disposing of that paper in 1867, to James E Anderson, of notorious fame in connection with the Louisiana election frauds. In 1865 Mr. Glass and his son Frank C established the Pan Handle News, which is still published and edited by the father and son, under the firm name of Glass & Son.

     In 1842 Mr. Glass married Miss Eleanor Curran, of Montreal, Canada. They have had ten children - all boys-five of whom are now living, the youngest being thirteen years of age. The four oldest, Frank C, Alfred, Joseph and William are practical printers. Before settling in Wellsburg Mr. Glass traveled over a large portion of this country.
