Prof. C. E. Githens.

     Prominent among Wellsburg's professional men is Prof. C. E. Githens, principal of the Wellsburg public schools.

     Prof. Githens was born in Beallsville, Ohio, December 27th 1863. He received his public school education at Beallsville, and later entered Franklin College, at which institution he graduated. In addition to his college and classical course, he acquired a thorough business education. After receiving his diplomas he was elected to the superintendency of the public schools at Baresville, where he remained for a period of years, fulfilling his duties with marked success. He then entered into the capacity of superintendent of the schools at Clarington, Ohio. While at this place he was married to Miss Clara E. Stegner, in 1890.

     He was next elected to the principalship of the public schools at Belpre, Ohio, remaining in this position until 1896, when he came to this city, succeeding Prof. Walter Mitchell as superintendent of the Wellsburg schools.

     Prof. Githens has succeeded in establishing for himself an excellent record in his professional line, is a gentleman of great popularity, and is the possessor of a very fine education. Withal he possesses every qualification necessary to the fulfilling of the many important duties which naturally evolve upon him in his present capacity, and has given the highest possible degree of satisfaction to all patrons of the school.

      Under his excellent management the Wellsburg schools, always bearing the highest of reputation, have prospered most thoroughly. Since coming to this city Prof. Githens has established a wide circle of friends, the highest esteem of the community at large, and truly exerts his entire influence to the advancement of Wellsburg's educational welfare. He is in fact thoroughly cognizant with every branch of his calling thus fully meeting the high reputation due to the marked success he has achieved.

      Mr. Githens is quite an enthusiast in the ancient game of chess, and is at present President of the West Virginia State Chess Association.
